The study core team consisted of the following research institutions\u2019 teams:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leiden University, Netherlands, Sabine Luning<\/li>\n<li>IFSRA, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Dr Peter Hochet, Aliz\u00e8ta Ou\u00e9draogo, PhD Student, and Aziz Diallo, Master<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The broader team was comprised of experts from the following institutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Permanent Secretariat of Water Resource Integrated Management (SP-GIRE)<\/li>\n<li>The Nakamb\u00e9 Water Agency (AEN)<\/li>\n<li>The Ministry of Mines, Quarries and Energy of Burkina Faso (MMCE)<\/li>\n<li>Mining companies<\/li>\n<li>The Burkinabe Chamber of Mines (CMB)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2>Research process<\/h2>\n<p>In order to meet its main objective, the specific study followed three main steps:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Study of Karengtenga artisanal mining site<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.1 Cartography<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gold mining site area<\/li>\n<li>Extraction holes<\/li>\n<li>Underground water pumping system<\/li>\n<li>Sites dedicated to ore processing (washing sites, chemical treatment sites)<\/li>\n<li>Rivers and lakes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1.2 Site description<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Land tenure statutes in the gold mining site<\/li>\n<li>Demographic data (number of gold mining workers, origins, men\/women\/children)<\/li>\n<li>Describe gold origin (alluvial deposits, gold rocks)<\/li>\n<li>Describe the extraction and ore processing steps, in particular work organisation and techniques<\/li>\n<li>Describe for each step the chemical products that are used<\/li>\n<li>Describe for each step water uses, procurements methods (water wells, rivers, lakes, etc.) and waste water systems and treatments<\/li>\n<li>Regarding habitations, describe water procurement strategies and sewage system (toilets, waste water)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Mining sector study<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activities of the companies and Ministry of Mines<\/li>\n<li>Description of the ongoing activities of the Ministry of Mines to apply the mining code, in particular regarding gold mining<\/li>\n<li>Description of the ongoing activities of the Chamber of Mines and mining companies regarding water shared management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3.
